Boundaries

Boundary, definition – a real or imagined line that marks the edge or limit of something

Rule, definition – an accepted principle or instruction that states the way things are done, and tells you what you are allowed or not allowed to do

  • Boundaries and rules are necessary within institutions because they create safety
  • Staff working within a community setting are expected to follow certain rules or boundaries
  • These rules or boundaries need to be clearly defined and stated
  • They need constant reviewing – this is part of reflective practice

Good reputations are based on good boundaries; poor boundaries can destroy good work and reputations. In both cases the effect can be lasting. Well considered boundaries are important and are the foundation from which best practice can emerge.
